After becoming progressively more and more irritated by XP's slowness on my home machine I installed the latest version of Ubuntu, Breezy Badger.
I must say that so far i really like the system. Runs fast, looks good. It took me a while to get the hang of repositories and apt-get, but now its no problem. If ther eis something that doesnt seem to be working then a quick search usually finds an answer. It also detects and supports almost all the hardware on my laptop (no SD card reader or Broadcom WIFI card) out of the box.
Still, I am not sure that it is yet at the point where i would i would install it on my parents machine. While I am sure it would be ok, I would think that the procedure to install new apps is still too complicated. Finding the right app using Synaptic is is not always easy, could use a self installing exe or something. If this already exists then, hey, I've only had it for a week.
One last thing I really am enjoying, is getting back in touch with the old Unix command line, takes me back to the old days at Heriot Watt and Ascada.
:-)
