Busy week

Not much blogging this week as things have been pretty crazy. First Ulrika was away from Tuesday to Saturday at the ESCP in Paris which meant that I was looking after Elsa by myself for the week. this doesnt leave too much extra time.
Then on friday it was Valborg which is the spring equinox or something like that. In Uppsala though its quite a big thing. Well with a town that has 40000 students, a bit of partying may go on. For a super fast view of what its like here on Valborg have a look at this film (large).
First up is the Forsränningen where different students build rafts and then sail them down the river.
Second is some pissed people and a guy in a cage?!?
Third is some shots of all the students (the 15000 people with white hats) standing in front of the library. Its a big tradition that the uni rector waves down at the students and then all the students wave back.
After this the students all rush to their unions where they drink champagne and party for the rest of the day. Its unlikely that anyone you see in this video is sober...

In between this your also supposed to have a champagne breakfast, a sill (pickled mackerel) lunch with snaps and go and see one of the big bonfires.

Then at the weekend it was Niclas' birthday party but I will post about that another time...

Spring in Uppsala

Well at long last spring seems to have arrived in Uppsala. Up to last week we had about 10cms snow and ice everywhere but now it looks like this:

which is much nicer, especially when your "pappaledight" like i am. Still got some way to go though...

Update: serves me right for speaking too soon but itssnowing gain today

    This was my first book by John Meaney and for most of the book I was pretty happy. It had a lot of interesting ideas about the structure of society and new types of technology. The biggest problem for me was that some of these could have used a lot more fleshing out. I had the feeling that somehow all these things would become clearer as the plot progressed but unfortunately that didnt happen. Still an enjoyable read by a new (to me) author. (***)

    I am a big fan of Iain M Banks and this was the first of his books that I read. Its a pretty unique story and the scale of the environment is a good new slant. When you start reading it takes a bit of time to get used to the parts that are written phonetically. But its worth sticking with it and after a while you almost dont notice :-) (*****)

    Neal Stephenson: Cryptonomicon
    This is a great book, especially if your even the smallest bit a geek. A good mix of face and fiction that is also humorous. Its not very often you get a blend of those that are as good as this. Big thumbs up. (*****)
